Fenno is still with us tonight...I'm reading him your letters

Terry is with Dad now, holding hands.........I'm telling you, this has been one difficult week.
Your letters have brought this family incredible comfort in such trying times. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We are especially grateful to you for the stories you are sending because these stories are new to us and to the Heath grandchildren.....6 Heath grandchildren, all reading this blog and being part of this 'virtual vigil' with all of their grandfather's friends, students, and colleagues.

  1. Dear Fenno, you taught me so much about music, how to hear and sing and understand it.... I've never forgotten your indomitable spirit and the wonderful years in the Glee Club. Thank you and God bless you.

Now I'm listening to some of your music and remembering, and thinking of all your family.

    Love,

  2. And Fenno didn’t just create an extended family of singers in New Haven, across the nation, and across the globe. He also created families with kids. My wife, Lisa Levine '86, and I met in the Glee Club. We’ve heard Fenno talk happily of other “Glee Club couples,” as well. It’s hard to count how many people’s lives he has touched, and all for the better. If there is a heavenly chorus, I’ve little doubt that it will soon be singing brighter, and definitely more on pitch.

    With love and gratitude,

  3. I have to follow up on Jim Salzman's comments about Glee Club couples -- I , too, met my husband, a Yale Alley Cat at the time, on YGC tour in January '89. Fenno did not actually come on that tour (giving Dave Tang the opportunity to shine in his hometown of Cleveland), but I am forever grateful to him and YGC for shaping my future in that remarkable way.

Also - so many folks have mentioned singing Fenno arrangements to their children. The only way I survived the first two months of parenthood was repeated renditions of "Shenandoah" to my wailing daughter. I hope Fenno can listen to Shenandoah today, as he heads "across the wide Missouri".

Okay, one last point! I happen to be a very..um..."expressive" singer, usually grinning rather maniacally as I sing. Fenno was always so sweet in pointing out how much he liked the big smiles. It meant the world to me that he would even notice one face in the big crowd. Individual attention from Fenno -- that was an enormous pleasure. That wry smile, the twinkling eyes, sometimes a wink.

And *boy* did he look good in tails...
